Colombo is a capital city of Sri Lanka and located on the west coast of Island. Also, it is the financial center of Island and famous tourist destination. The city has many canals and in the heart of the city 65 hectares Beira Lake. The Lake is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Colombo and was used for centuries by colonist to defend the city.
Greater Colombo area also included in Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte, the legislative capital of Sri Lanka. It was made capital of the Island when Sri Lanka was ceded to the British Empire in 1815.
The name “Colombo” first introduced by the Portuguese in 1505, is believed derived from the classical Sinhalese name Colon tota, the meaning is “Port of the River Kelani“.
Portuguese first arrived in Sri Lanka in 1505 and Dutch came to Sri Lanka in 1638 finally British captured Colombo in 1796.
