Galle is a Southern coastal beautiful and ancient city of the Island, 116km away from Colombo. It is reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period.

This city is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in the south and southwest in Asia. The Portuguese captured Galle in 1587 and erected the first fortification, a single wall fronted by a moat which extended from the sea to the harbor. Also, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural style and native traditions.

The Galle Fort is a world heritage site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by Europian.
